Rosie Revere, Engineer
Author: Andrea Beaty
Illustrator: David Roberts
Grade/Age Level: Grades K-3 (ages 5-8)

My Opinion:
"Rosie Revere, Engineer" is an inspiring and delightful story that encourages perseverance, creativity, and confidence. Rosie’s journey from doubting her abilities to embracing her engineering talents is a testament to the power of resilience and curiosity. Andrea Beaty’s rhyming text is engaging, while David Roberts’ whimsical illustrations bring Rosie’s inventions to life. This book is a must-have for fostering a growth mindset in young learners.

Curriculum Integration:
Rosie’s story fits seamlessly into STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) initiatives and lessons on growth mindset and problem-solving. Here’s how I bring it to life in my library:
  • Paper Airplane Challenge: After reading the book, my students design and test their own paper airplanes. They brainstorm, build, and improve their designs to see how far or high they can fly. It’s a hands-on way to emphasize trial, error, and perseverance.
  • STEAM Challenge: Extend the learning by asking students to create a unique invention using recycled materials.
  • Growth Mindset Activity: Discuss how inventors like Thomas Edison and Marie Curie turned failures into successes, reinforcing Rosie’s message.
Note about the Novel Effects App:
Elevate the read-aloud experience with the Novel Effects app! It adds engaging sound effects and music that sync with the story, making Rosie’s journey even more captivating for young readers. I call it "Library Magic" and my students love it!

Comparison with Other Books in the Series:
I use this book in an author/illustrator study and my students love all the books in the series!
Rosie, Ada, Sofia, and the other characters each bring their unique strengths—engineering, scientific inquiry, and community leadership—to inspire students. We create skyline drawings, experiment with paper towels, and as mentioned, have a paper airplane challenge. They highlight the importance of dreaming big, thinking critically, and working together to make a difference.
