What I like About It
This book is refreshing and heartfelt. Bailey’s story is one that many students might not see often in books, yet it resonates with universal themes of dreaming big and finding understanding. 10,000 Dresses encourages empathy and kindness, showing readers the value of standing by someone even if they’re different from us. I was moved by Bailey’s resilience and the gentle message of friendship and self-expression that Ewert masterfully weaves into the story.
Curriculum Integration Ideas
10,000 Dresses can be a wonderful addition to a discussion about empathy, inclusion, and self-expression. It works well in both classroom settings and the library as a “book talk” choice, where students discuss what makes them feel unique and how they see themselves. It’s also perfect for comparing with other books about finding your voice and learning to be yourself.

Drama by Raina Telgemeier is another fantastic story that explores identity and belonging in the middle school setting, which many of our 5th graders are starting to think about. For students who enjoy stories about finding friends who accept them for who they are, 10,000 Dresses and Drama are excellent reads!
Each of these books creates an inclusive space for kids to see themselves and others positively. Adding diverse stories like 10,000 Dresses to our collections is a valuable step towards fostering a supportive, understanding environment where all kids feel they belong.
